Bluewater, one of Europe’s largest and most innovative retail and leisure destination opened on March 16, 1999. In the absence of a designated amenity, Bluewater Shopping Village is effectively the high street for the Parish and offers a multitude of retail, leisure and catering options for local residents. For the seventh year running, Bluewater are also the main sponsor of the annual Stone Fete.
Glow, the Bluewater events venue was opened in 2011 to enhance the guest experience with consumer shows for weddings, baby and toddlers, and arts and crafts.
Planning permission was also approved enabling Bluewater to change the use of Glow from exhibition and events venue to also allow for music concerts, sporting events, stand-up comedy, live childrens shows and corporate events for a temporary period of 2 years.
However, Glow failed to attract footfall and is due to close later this year.
Lend Lease, Bluewater’s co-owners and manager, is currently proposing to extend the West Village. An outline planning application was approved by Dartford Borough Council for an extension of up to 20% of the existing retail and catering space at Bluewater.
Plans received a positive response from the pre-submission consultation that took place at Stone Pavilion in autumn 2012. As well as a general opinion that Bluewater must continue to evolve, there was widespread recognition and support of the number of jobs that could be created, up to 2,300, as well as the other economic benefits to the community.
